A cold day to visit the Grand Tetons

Describe Yourself:In a long career Ritz has worked for six daily newspapers, including the Buffalo News and Buffalo Courier-Express. He was a correspondent for the United Press and been a stringer for such newspapers as The New York Post , The New York Herald-Tribune, The Detroit Times, The National Catholic Reporter, The Chicago Tribune and The London (England) Express.
He is the author of two books. The Despised Poor, (Beacon Press) received favorable reviews in the New York Times and several other newspapers and in national magazines, such as The Atlantic Monthly.
I Never Looked for My Mother and Other Regrets of a Journalist is his latest book. The title comes from a journey made finding what he owes his unknown mother, said to be the sister of two priests, who gave me up. There is humor, madness and mischief in the book which also tells stories about newspaper reporters and editors he has known as well as such well known persons as Truman, Nixon and Martin Luther King.
Ritz wrote part of a series of articles entitled The Road to Integration, which won a Pulitzer Prize for the Gannett Group of newspapers. He has also won several national and state awards in his own right for his newspaper stories.
In recent years, he has returned to writing plays, a vice he first took up in college. He was one of four finalists in the prestigious Drama League of New YorkÂ's 1987-88 Plays in Progress Competition for Abbey of the Monongahela , a play set in a Trappist monastery focusing on the conflict between a feminist reporter wishing to find out the truth about a famous monkÂ's illicit romance and the abbot who wants to keep the story hidden. It was given its first full staging by the American Ensemble Theatre Company in Manhattan.
It also won an award from the University of MassachusettsÂ' Theater Department, where it was further developed and renamed Trappists. It was staged again in New York City in 1993 by the American Theatre for Actors and has been performed in several other cities. In 1994 it won a best play award from Christians in Theatre Arts. In 1997, the play was second in the Open Book Contest sponsored by the Stage and Screen Book Club and Doubleday . A new production opened in April, 2001 in New York City. It is published by Doubleday as part of an anthology entitled: INCISIONS, Award Winning Plays from the Stage and Screen Book Club.
The Harvest Years was one of the three winning plays in the Henrico Theatre contest in 1999 and premiered in Richmond, Va. in 2000.
Other plays have been performed in various cities, including Los Angeles.
In 2002 he was awarded a playwriting fellowship by the New York Foundation for the Arts. In 2000, he received Marquette University's Byline Award.

Wade Standifer, Feb 10, 2010, 11:44AM ESTDear Joseph,
We are very pleased to inform you that your script, “A Rule of Silence”, has been chosen from over 300 entries to be one of the 2010 Great Plains Theatre Conference Playlabs. The Conference Playlabs run concurrently throughout the conference scheduled from May 29 – June 5. Upon your acceptance of participation in the Conference, your script will be assigned a director and cast who will rehearse your play prior to a reading at the Conference. A panel of theatre professionals and academics will be present during the Playlab reading and provide public feedback to you about your work. In addition, written feedback will be provided by the reading’s audience, consisting of fellow playwrights and the attending theatre professionals and practitioners at the Conference.
The Conference also presents numerous other learning opportunities for you throughout the week. These include the Writer’s Workshop classes, panels of national experts providing insights on playwriting, and evening performances from conference master playwrights. This year’s honored playwright, David Lindsay-Abaire, will be a featured panelist and three of the evening performances will feature his works.
The Conference is an intense week of taking workshops, attending evening performances and receptions, working on scripts, and networking with other playwrights, directors, and actors from across the country. Here is a link to our website where we have posted some of the feedback that we have received from playwrights who have attended in the past – click here. (It’s at the bottom half of the page.) The website also has a preliminary schedule for this year, and look at past conferences.
If you accept our invitation to participate in this year’s Conference, there are several requirements that you need you to agree to;
• You are required to attend the conference for the entire week: May 29th – June 5th.
• You agree to conversing and working positively with your director and cast to help with any questions that they may have about your script.
• You agree to be in attendance at the Playlabs and support your fellow playwrights on each day of the conference.
• You will provide us the name and email address of your local media outlets for announcement of your participation.
*Normally, Playlab participants are responsible for full conference registration ($325), housing, and meals. This year, through the generous support of Omaha arts patrons, a sponsorship has been created to pay for both your full conference registration and housing.
The housing option is with the Creighton University student residence housing. It is very basic, college housing. (If you so choose, you can upgrade to our conference hotel, but the conference will not be able to cover that cost.)
We provide a free van service for transportation to and from Creighton University and the conference hotel to all events.
A continental breakfast and a buffet style lunch will be provided for you every day. You will be responsible for your dinner. Creighton University has several cafeterias and we will make arrangements for you to have discounted access to dining areas on the Creighton University campus.
*Once you accept our invitation, we will immediately begin booking a director, a stage manager, actors, and rehearsal space for your script. Our Marketing and Public Relations office will begin including you and your play in all of our advertising and press releases and will also send a press release to your local media contacts about your selection. Our events staff will begin making arrangements for your housing and other logistics. Many good people will be making an effort on your behalf. Please only accept our invitation if you can make a firm commitment to attend.
We are very excited for the Conference this year. The quality of plays submitted has risen once again, and the Writer’s Workshops are shaping up to be the best that we have ever had. We are very pleased to be able to invite you and “A Rule of Silence”, to the Conference this year. We hope you will be able to join us. Please let us know if you have any questions. We will need to receive your answer by February 5th.
Warmly,
Kevin Lawler

Beth G., Mar 8, 2009, 9:41PM EDTHi Joseph! I kind of did things a bit backwards from you, grew up in Southern Ohio, Circleville, and now I've been in Chicago for three and a half years now myself. Kind of ironic huh? Have a great night

Nancy Paoletti, Jan 16, 2009, 10:37PM ESTThanks for the friend request. And I'll mention something elwe about being on hold and automated phones. On my last job, we'd get these calls every so often, that was an automated voice saying "please hold for a very important call". I figured if it was so darned important they would have a real person calling! LOL
